Installing and Using Primd App
Primd is built as a Progressive Web Application (PWA). That's a fancy term for a website with some additional code and meta information that allows it to be more easily installed and integrated with your device. While Primd App will eventually be available in mobile device stores, you don't need to wait.
Already using Primd and want to get a more native experience?
Don't Have a Smart Phone?
While Primd is designed for mobile use, you can use it on your desktop too. Simply open the link in any compatible browser in its own window and reduce the width of the window until the app interface becomes visible. If your browser is too wide, you'll get a message encouraging you to open it on a mobile phone. More specifically, any browser window narrower than 640 pixels should be capable of displaying the app interface.
Compatibility
Primd is broadly compatible with modern smart phones including Apple's iPhone as well as common Android devices. As a PWA, it's generally more important to have an up-to-date browser and less important to have the right phone. While we strongly recommend Firefox for a good balance of compatibility and privacy, we frequently test on recent versions of:
- Chrome
- Firefox
- Safari
Getting Started
To start using or installing Primd App, you can scan the QR code on the right. If you're already in a mobile browser, simply click the the code instead and we'll open it in a new tab so you can come back here.
Complete the Welcome Process
The QR/link provided here will trigger a welcome process that will keep you on track to better understand the core features of Primd. It's possible to skip any (and every step) and come back to it later, but we strongly recommend reading each welcome screen to get a better sense of what the app is about and how it works.
Registration and Login
The second step of the welcome process is registering. Registration is not required, however, if you don't register your account you risk losing the skills or connections you've entered. Primd takes user rights and privacy very seriously, so while you can always use Primd without providing an email address your email is the only way to access your account if you lose your current session. A browser session can be lost for a number of reasons, but most commonly:
- You clear your browser history and site data.
- You inadvertently use a different browser.
- Your device's storage becomes corrupted or there's a bug in the software.
We don't use passwords
You've got enough to remember. Primd uses a simple email based login system where we send a link to your email. This also means that the process of registering and logging in is exactly the same. Providing a new email address will send an email with a registration link while providing an existing email will send you a login link.
Links sent in emails remain active for up to 15 minutes. If for some reason you're not receiving the registration or login email, make sure to double check your SPAM. In all cases you should never share these links with anyone else, including anyone claiming to be from Primd support.
What if I lose access to my e-mail?
Once you've registered with an e-mail and you're logged in, you can set a "Recovery Phrase" via the Settings screen. A recovery phrase is not a password and is a bit less secure than one. Although they are encrypted when stored, unlike best-practices for storing passwords they are not "hashed." Encrypted strings can be decrypted with keys while hashes are a form of one way scrambling that can only be matched by scrambling the original data.
If you lose access to your registered email address, you can contact us and provide the registered email address. Primd support will ask for your recovery phrase and verify by decrypting the phrase set on the account against what you tell us.
Installing or Adding Primd to Your Home Screen
Progressive Web Applications like Primd are designed to be able to be added directly to your homescreen or installed to appear as native applications. This has a handful of benefits including:
- Better integration (link handling, worker services)
- Increased screen real-estate by removing browser decorations
- Quick and easy access at the press of a button
Unfortunately, every browser handles this process slightly differently and even those that provide a clear installation prompt may only prompt you after having used the app in your browser for some period of time. If you're already been using Primd in-browser (especially on Chrome), check the Settings screen to see if there's already an Install button available.
If you don't see an install option in Settings, you can manually install Primd via your browser's menu while on the app and look for an option such as "Add to Home Screen". Accessing the right menu:
- Chrome and Firefox users should look for the 3 dot icon in the upper right hand of the browser.
- Safari users need to use the share icon located in the center at the bottom of the browser (the square with the up pointing arrow).
Logging Out (Sessions)
Every device which accesses Primd via an email registration or login link will be logged into Primd. When logging in, your existing browser session is tied to the account authorized via the link sent in the email. Primd support per-session logout, enabling you to see other sessions currently attached to your account and remove them, or log out of your current session.
All logout functionality can be accessed via the Settings screen.
Removing Your Account
While we hate to see you go, we understand if you no longer need or want to use Primd and would like to have your account removed. At present, Primd can handle account removals through a simple support requests. See our contact page for available options. Upcoming releases will make this process fully automated and available via the Settings screen.
